Key takeaways
- Identify the taxpayer account, tax type and payment reference before applying for a correction.
- The FTA permits a request to refund an erroneous or excess payment or to carry credit forward.
- A payment to the wrong entity should not be assumed to settle another entity’s liability.
A payment made to the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) in error is not the same as an excess input-VAT credit shown on a VAT return. The correct route depends on which taxpayer account received the payment, which tax or liability it was allocated to, and whether the amount is still available as credit. Start with the EmaraTax payment reference and account statement rather than making a second payment without checking the first.
What if too much tax was paid to the FTA?
The FTA service for registered taxpayers covers extra payments as well as eligible input-tax refunds. Its guidance says a registered person may submit a refund request for a payment made erroneously or in excess, or carry the excess payment forward as credit for future periods. For an extra-payment refund, it lists proof of payment and a bank IBAN letter among the required documents. The tax account and refund eligibility should be checked first.
What if the payment went to the wrong account or tax type?
Identify the sending bank account, date, amount, payment reference, intended TRN and tax type, and the account on which the payment appears. A request to move a payment between accounts is not the same as the standard VAT311 input-tax refund. Contact the FTA through the current EmaraTax support route with the evidence and ask which correction service applies. Do not assume that an unallocated amount on one entity’s account automatically settles another entity’s liability.
How should the accounts be reconciled?
- Download the FTA account statement and identify the precise liability, payment and available credit.
- Match the bank debit and payment reference to the relevant return or assessment.
- Keep the payment confirmation, bank statement, IBAN letter and any FTA correspondence together.
- Record the refund, transfer or carry-forward only when the authority status supports it.
Can the business leave an excess payment as a credit?
The FTA says an erroneous or excess payment can be carried forward in the registered person’s FTA account. That does not mean every disputed payment is automatically available for the next return: the account must show the credit and any existing liabilities must be understood. If cash recovery is needed, the taxpayer must make the relevant refund request. The FTA also states that excess payment by itself does not trigger a penalty.
SAIF can help reconcile the tax ledger, bank evidence and EmaraTax statement, then prepare the documents for the route confirmed by the FTA. A refund amount and processing time cannot be guaranteed before the authority reviews the application.
